Mary Mashburn, the "Fairy Godmother of Arts"

Mary Mashburn, Fairy Godmother of the Arts

October is Arts Month — a time to celebrate the rich history of artistic expression in the Pikes Peak region and to highlight the many wonderful people who have contributed to promoting the arts in our community. Perhaps no one is more deserving of recognition than the beloved Mary Mashburn, the “Fairy Godmother of the Arts”— who sprinkled joy and delight into our lives with her magic wand and lively personality. However, beneath the crown, gown, and glitter — Mary was a steel-willed force for good in our community. She was someone you simply couldn’t say no to.

    CSPM Happenings: 50% Artists' Gathering

Museum patrons in the 50% of the Story gallery

Whenever you fill a room with women — powerful connections are created. And when those women are artists, magic is made! On Thursday, October 17th, the CSPM hosted a special gathering for artists featured in 50% of the Story.  The evening was filled with conversation, connection, and celebration of art and each other. Make sure to view their remarkable work in the CSPM’s bold new exhibit: 50% of the Story: Women Expressing Creativity

Conserving the Division III Courtroom Mural

    Division 3 Courtroom restoration

As part of the HVAC and Building Restoration project, the Division III Courtroom was rehabilitated into an exhibit gallery to expand the CSPM’s capacity in sharing more stories about our community. One of the historic features in this room is a legal-themed mural above the judge’s bench. For 120 years, the mural served to remind courtroom visitors of the serious work conducted in the room. The mural required cleaning and stabilization due to the decades of light, tobacco smoke, and dust accumulation. We are pleased to announce that this final part of our capital project was completed last month by the Western Center for Conservation of Fine Art (WCCFA).

A Stroll Through History - October Volunteer Recognition

    Volunteers lead CSPM's History Stroll

The CSPM is not confined to the four stone walls of the 1903 El Paso County Courthouse. History is everywhere. Our History Stroll program helps guests to "stop and smell the roses" of Colorado Springs' past. CSPM staff and volunteers guide visitors through the streets of historic downtown Colorado Springs, helping them discover the living landscape and build environment. This month, we are recognizing a team of five volunteers -- Fran, Katina, Michael, Tanja, and Bruce who led this summer's history stroll "On a Cough and Prayer: Tuberculosis and the City."

“Art has always been something we have valued and treasured in community building. It has been an integral piece of our family’s history and we felt that 50% of the Story: Women Expressing Creativity was a perfect celebration of local art and the remarkable women who create it.”-Susan Pattee, Board Chair of Bloom Foundation.

Bloom Foundation believes in the power of action-oriented philanthropy to inspire a thriving community. Throughout Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region, they champion organizations with big ideas and new perspectives who just need the right support to truly bloom while catalyzing a spirit of philanthropy in others.
